Summary

Welcome to the world of the Grisha。

Kaz Brekker and his crew of deadly outcasts have just pulled off a heist so daring even they didn't think they'd survive。 But instead of divvying up a fat reward, they're right back to fighting for their lives。

Double-crossed and badly weakened, the crew is low on resources, allies, and hope。 As powerful forces from around the world descend on Ketterdam to root out the secrets of the dangerous drug known as jurda parem, old rivals and new enemies emerge to challenge Kaz's cunning and test the team's fragile loyalties。

A war will be waged on the city's dark and twisting streets - a battle for revenge and redemption that will decide the fate of the Grisha world。

2 1/2 stars, rounded up cause I’m feeling vaguely generous。 This could have been so good。 Most of it was。 And yet that ending。 What was the reason? What did Matthias do to deserve that? Why。 Give me one good reason and I might increase my rating。 Because right now I’m pissed that another author killed off a character right at the end FOR NO FUCKING REASON。 That entire scene could’ve been completely avoided, there was NO reason for it and it made no sense for the characters。But even beyond that I hated Nina’s powers after parem。 Being a heartrender was so cool and now Bardugo stripped her of that and somehow made her grateful for it? For having her entire identity as a Grisha changed? I call bullshit。 Even beyond THAT Bardugo has such a struggle with not balancing heavy dialogue and heavy action/description。 It’s a huge flaw in her writing style because it makes the scenes flat and the characters lost in a bubble。 I can’t argue that her characters in this series are built wonderfully。 They’re definitely my favorite part and what makes me come back to it and even what makes me want to continue with King of Scars。 But the absolute disrespect to Nina and Matthias is almost unforgivable honestly。 I’m going to have to bury myself in fanfic to forget about it。 。。。more

Such a rollercoaster! Even better than the 1st book。 If you love a good heist, a lot of wit, great world-building and a little bit of magic, this is definitely a book I can recommend :)

This was the perfect book to pick up after finishing the Netflix Shadow & Bone adaptation! This was a WONDERFUL conclusion to the duology。 I loved the first book, but this one really brought it to life。 The plot was very compelling and this installment really dug into the motivations and relationships of all the characters。 I can’t wait to continue to see them explored in the show, now that I’ve finished the duology!

This duology and this book were SO GOOD! I almost hate to say it, but I like this duology better than the S&B trilogy。 I mean I still love the trilogy, but WOW these two were amazing! I kind of can’t believe it’s over。 I don’t feel ready to say goodbye to these characters yet。Anyway, here are some of my favorite things about this book。 I loved that we got to see more of Ketterdam! Don’t get me wrong, I loved the Ice Court heist, but I find the city to be more interesting。 At the very least, I lo This duology and this book were SO GOOD! In the first book they were still getting used to eachother, but in this one they really knew and loved eachother。 They are #friendshipgoals。And don’t even get me started on the romances! Almost every couple got the perfect ending for them and I am so glad。 I am especially happy with Wylan and Jesper’s ending! But despite how much I love (mostly) how everything worked out, I have to say。。。 really Leigh Bardugo? Did you have to make me sob my eyes out AGAIN?Oh and speaking of Wylan, I love that he finally got his own POV chapters! They just made me love him even more。 He might even be in the running for my favorite Crow now。 Nina is still my queen, but Wylan is my sweet ginger prince。Anyway, these books were stunning and I definitely recommend them! 。。。more

That she’d wake and find herself a princess? Or blessed with magical powers and a grand destiny? Maybe there were people who lived those lives。 Maybe this girl was one of them。 But what about the rest of us? What about the nobodies and the nothings, the invisible girls? We learn to hold our heads as if we wear crowns。 We learn to wring magic from the ordinary。 That was how you survived when you weren’t chosen, when there was no royal blood in your veins。 When the world owed you nothing, you demanded something of it anyway。 Inej raised a brow and slowly wiped the blood of kings on her trousers。”I AM BEYOND HAPPY SHE GOT TO REUNITE WITH HER PARENTS。 AND GOT HER SHIP。 AND MADE PEKKA ROLLINS RUN WITH HIS TAIL BETWEEN HIS LEGS。And the whole chapter where Kaz brought Pekka Rollins to his knees? CHEF KISS, I allow one man to bluff about having buried a child six feet underground。 Jesper’s arc was also wonderful, his backstory was so beautiful, so loving。 I love the parallels between Jesper and his mom, and Wylan’s and his。 When Jesper’s dad say his mom was a Queen I teared up。 And the way we find out about Wylan’s mom still being alive??? GODD, I almost ripped the book in half。 I love how they both found a sense of self, a sense of direction in this book。 And that Jesper found forgiveness。 When he directed the bullet and mentioned that he himself had always felt like one…waiting for direction, TOP TIER WRITING。 And then theres two。 God Nina was a literal goddess in this one。 It hurt so bad watching her go through the drug to lose her old powers and feel so disconnected from everything……。。and then once she finds herself again, understands her new powers (THEY ARE SO FUCKING COOL) and is happy…just to get Matthias ripped away from her。“I promise, Matthias。 I’ll take you home。”“Nina,” he said, pressing her hand to his heart。 “I am already home。”And Matthias。 God, Matthias。 His arc is my favourite from the first book。 He makes me go insane he truly does, and his last words…making Nina promise she will save his brothers…she will make them see reason, understand grisha are not the enemy…he died hoping they could still be saved…this little boy could still be saved…“He had。 An uncomfortable thought。 Through Jesper and Kuwei, he had wielded Grisha power。 And yet, Matthias did not feel tainted or somehow marked by it。 He remembered what Nina had said about the construction of the Ice Court, that it must be the work of Grisha and not the work of Djel。 What if both things were true? What if Djel worked through these people? Unnatural。 The word had come so easily to him, a way to dismiss what he did not understand, to make Nina and her kind less than human。 But what if behind the righteousness that drove the drüskelle, there was something less clean or justified? What if it wasn’t even fear or anger but simply envy? What did it mean to aspire to serve Djel, only to see his power in the gifts of another, to know you could never possess those gifts yourself? The drüskelle gave their oath to Fjerda, but to their god as well。 If they could be made to see miracles where once they’d seen abomination, what else might change? I have been made to protect you。 His duty to his god, his duty to Nina。 Maybe they were the same thing。 What if Djel’s hand had raised the waters the night of the wrathful storm that wrecked the drüskelle ship and bound Matthias and Nina together? Matthias was running through the streets of a foreign city, into dangers he did not know, but for the first time since he’d looked into Nina’s eyes and seen his own humanity reflected back at him, the war inside him quieted。 We’ll find a way to change their minds, she’d said。 All of them。 He would locate Nina。 They would survive this night。 They would free themselves of this damp, misbegotten city, and then … Well, then they’d change the world。”He literally thinks that his God brought him and Nina together he WAS SO LOVING, AND IM GONNA MISS HIM SO FUCKING MUCH。5/5 I love books that make me cry 。。。more

Wow。 Just。。。 wow。 This book was utterly relentless, it started out with the stakes, tension, and pace of the last quarter of a normal book and stayed intense to the very end。 The twists! The characters! The ending! Bardugo can write, that’s for sure。 She’s improved by leaps and bounds since the Shadow and Bone trilogy。 I hope the Netflix series gets as many seasons as it takes for every moment of this book to play out onscreen。 The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is because I don’t see mys Wow。 Just。。。 wow。 This book was utterly relentless, it started out with the stakes, tension, and pace of the last quarter of a normal book and stayed intense to the very end。 The twists! Barely enough praises can be made for this book and there isn't enough words in my vocabulary to fully express how much I love these characters。 But will I still try? Honestly it’s more of a 3。5 than 3 just because I genuinely enjoyed the book by the end。 It felt so nice getting to know the characters in depth and connecting to them but the beginning was so slow that it took me such a long time to finish。 Also hate what happened to some characters and a couple that should have been Now I can officially start the show on Netflix !!!

THIS IS SO GOOD。 I UGLY CRIED。 I'M GRIEVING。 Bardugo has truly honed the art of writing, crafting a dynamic world with characters whose depth will take your breath away。 This book will stay with me for a long time。 I fell in love with Ketterdam and the crow crew, and I already miss them。 The ending obliterated me, it's been three days and I'm still not ok, but that's also a hallmark of incredible writing when you can draw your readers in like that。 Read it。 Just read it。 THIS IS SO GOOD。 I UGLY CRIED。 I'M GRIEVING。 Bardugo has truly honed the art of writing, crafting a dynamic world with characters whose depth will take your breath away。 This book will stay with me for a long time。 I fell in love with Ketterdam and the crow crew, and I already miss them。 The ending obliterated me, it's been three days and I'm still not ok, but that's also a hallmark of incredible writing when you can draw your readers in like that。 Read it。 Just read it。 。。。more

I could never tell if it was planned or if it was actually going wrong! There were no shortage of emotional moments either。 I don't normally cry in books, but something at the end almost had me tearing up (I think the only reason I did not cry is because I was spoiled to it, so I was able to prepare myself)。 The characters were the highlight, once again。 I think the only reason I loved the plot so much was because I had grown to truly love these characters。 They each stand on their own with different sides, shades of grey, weaknesses, and dreams。 They shine on their own and they shine in their relationships。 Not just the romance relationships, though those are phenomenal。 The friendships between the characters are highlighted just as much。 I loved every relationship and was fully invested in the romantic and platonic aspects。I can see why so many people love this series。 I am proud to say I am now one of them, and am so sorry it took me so long to read these。 I recently got over my aversion and apprehension to extremely hyped books and am now catching up on all the ones I've been missing。 I definitely recommend, if you haven't already read these。 I will be continuing on and finishing the rest of the grisha books next, so next up is King of Scars。 I am hopeful that that one will at least compare to this duology。 Hopefully I will be able to get through a bunch of books this summer, job permitting。 See you in the next review! 。。。more

I will always love how Bardugo’s writing pulls me in。 I don’t read too many fast-paced novels and being able to quickly step into her universe。。。it’s a lot of fun。 However, I found the plot pretty boring and easily forgettable。 I enjoy the characters and the universe itself, but this plot was not the most interesting。 Since the whole premise was rooted in money and the market, it was difficult to stay connected to the story when their end goal was a bit obscure (unlike Six of Crows, for example) I will always love how Bardugo’s writing pulls me in。 I don’t read too many fast-paced novels and being able to quickly step into her universe。。。it’s a lot of fun。 However, I found the plot pretty boring and easily forgettable。 I enjoy the characters and the universe itself, but this plot was not the most interesting。 Since the whole premise was rooted in money and the market, it was difficult to stay connected to the story when their end goal was a bit obscure (unlike Six of Crows, for example)。 So, in conclusion, I appreciated having some more time in this universe, but the plot/premise was meh。 。。。more
